Mobile Scaffolding Safety Guidelines

There are several reasons why contractors deploy mobile scaffolding. First, the equipment is portable and light. Therefore, it can easily be moved around the site. Second, mobile scaffolds are quite versatile since they are ideal for indoor and outdoor applications. Third, the scaffolding has a straightforward assembly procedure, eliminating the need for professional installation. Finally, the scaffolding is cheaper than other alternatives such as steel and cantilever scaffolds.

However, you must be cautious when using this scaffolding. Remember, oversights could lead to accidents at the site. Below is an extensive piece on the precautions contractors and homeowners should take when using mobile scaffolding.

Follow The Installation Manual

Although mobile scaffolds are easy to set up, you should always follow the installation manual as you assemble the equipment. It helps prevent accidents caused by poor installation. For instance, failure to lock the couplers could make the scaffolding unstable. Similarly, if you switch the poles during installation, the equipment could collapse during use. As a rule, you should place the scaffold on level and stable ground. If not, it could begin to sink when loaded. Alternatively, people working on the scaffolding could slip as they work.

Inspect The Scaffold Before Use

Once you install the scaffold, conduct a preliminary inspection to establish that it is safe to board. For instance, check the poles for cracks and bends that could comprise the scaffolding's structural integrity. Moreover, ensure that the scaffold's wheel locking mechanism is fully functional. If not, the scaffolding could begin to move with people on board. Check the scaffold's ladder to ensure it does not have missing or bent steps. If the scaffold has outriggers, check whether they are of equal height and firmly on the ground. Finally, examine the platform and guardrails. For instance, are the railings firmly secured? Is the working platform firm and level? Remember, you could fall if the platform's planks are weak or rotten.

Safety When Using The Scaffolding

Follow these safety guides when using the scaffolding;

  • Lock the castors before boarding the scaffold.
  • Use the ladder to board the platform. You risk slipping if you use the poles to hoist yourself on the platform.
  • Check the weight limits of the scaffolding to avoid overloading.
  • Consider using a safety harness to guarantee safety as you use the scaffold.
  • Keep the working surface clean and dry. Liquids and objects could cause falls as you work.
  • Avoid using the scaffolding in rainy weather or strong winds.

Safety precautions to observe when using mobile scaffolding include following the installation manual, inspecting the scaffolding and following the recommended safety guidelines.

About Me

Building a basement

We have a small house on a small block and we can't extend the house up due to council restrictions. We really need some more storage room though, which is why we have been building a basement extension. It's quite a big project to build a large basement under an existing house and we definitely didn't realise how much work it was going to be before we got started! Now it's finished I'm glad we did it because it has given us a lot more space. This blog shows our project fom start to finish and should be useful for anyone attempting the project.
